Word of the Month: May

in , by Gavin and Kylie Plus 4, 4:00 AM
I can't believe that it is already May!  I'd love to say that we will be done with school this month but that just isn't the case. #grr

A new month, means a new goal!

If you're new around here, instead of making a New Year's Resolution, I have been making a new goal each month.  I have LOVED this to be honest!  The short term goals just seem much more attainable in this phase of my life, and I am able to set them for what I really need to work on at the time.

If you'd like to go back and read any of my other posts, here they are!
January--Junk Free!

To be totally honest, March and April didn't go exactly as I wished they would have but I am SLOWLY learning that I have to give myself grace.  While I would love to workout 5-6 mornings a week, there are times when my kids need me at 4:30 in the morning and therefore it just doesn't happen.  In the moment, I would love to say that I just take in all of the snuggles, but that's not exactly reality.  I tend to be pretty grumpy about it!  Looking back, even mid morning, I know that holding them for that half an hour to an hour is exactly where I needed to be and those moments will pass all too quickly.

My goal for May is MORNINGS!!

May gets hard, friends!  The end of the school year is exhausting, along with it being nice out and my own kids playing outside past their bedtimes.  I don't like to miss out on that so I tend to leave all of the dishes and picking up until they're in bed.  Due to that, I tend to struggle to just pop out of bed like I normally do.  I know myself though, and I know that my day goes SOOO much better if I just get up and get things started!

So with my MORNING goal, I want to--
--Do 1 load of laundry EVERY morning (wash, dry, fold, and put away)
--Tidy up anything that didn't get done the night before
--Workout
--Eat breakfast

While none of those things are very hard for me to do, when I fall behind, I often feel like I'm drowning by Thursday.  I'm hoping by setting this goal for myself that this month won't be quite as exhausting.

Word of the Month: April

So if you're new around here, I have made it a goal for myself to make a "resolution" for each month instead of one for the whole year.

For January, my goal was titled "Junk-free January."
February was "Finance February" and you can read that HERE.
March was "Movement" and you can read that HERE.

I will be completely honest, March didn't go well in terms of my monthly goal.  Between vacation in LA and then the stomach flu plague that hit our house, I probably had the worst workout month in like three years.  I even took off a week after everyone was sick because I was so.dang.tired!
Soooooo.....I'm completely redoing that word and titling this month "Active April."

I'm keeping my goal of 30 minutes of movement every day of the month.  This is way easier now that it is getting nicer out as my kids love to go for walks and play outside.  I'd love to get an actual workout in every day but as long as my watch registers 30 minutes of movement, I am going to count that as a win.
Gavin and I started Transform: 20 on Beachbody On Demand yesterday morning so I am really hoping that I like it and stick with it for the whole program.  It is only 20 minutes long each day which gives us a little time to do a couple of other things also.
Anyone else make a New Year's Resolution that you're still sticking to?  I've really liked having a monthly goal instead of one for the whole year as it has been much easier to keep going.

Have a great day!  Tomorrow's post is all about our MURDER MYSTERY party!!

WORD OF THE MONTH: MARCH

in , by Gavin and Kylie Plus 4, 5:00 AM
My goal for 2019 wasn't to have one major New Year's Resolution.  I've never really been someone to make one anyways.  I instead decided to pick a goal each month that I felt really fit with what I needed at that point in the year.
Hah!  I actually did a fairly decent job but I just can't say no to a bowl of ice cream!

January was coined "Junk Free January," and I really worked on cutting out the junk food I had been eating over the holidays.  I also cleaned out all of our junk drawers.  If you'd like to read that post, click HERE.

February was "Finance February."  My goal was to keep a better eye on where I/we spent money and focus on areas that maybe we could be saving some more.  While there were some areas that were surprising to me (Hello, grocery bill!), I didn't feel like there were areas that we could really cut costs.  Obviously, we could easily cut some of our spending but we also want to enjoy things with our kids.

My word for March is...MOVEMENT!
I have an Apple watch that tracks my activity minutes, calories, steps, and a whole slew of other things that I am sure I don't use.  I love mine and love that I am able to track fitness related things.  My goal for each day is to meet my 30 minutes of exercise, even if that means going for a walk or playing outside, and also to get 15,000 steps.
I'd also like to see the temperature in that top left corner be much much higher!!

Did you make a New Year's resolution?  How has it gone?!  I'd love to hear!

New Year's Resolution: Word of the Month

Anyone else?! I haven't really been someone to make New Year's Resolutions in the past or at least not ones that I am serious enough about to actually make some changes.

This year, instead of making ONE resolution to stick with all year, I decided to have a "Word of the Month."  My hope is that I am able to really select something that is pertinent for that time of the year and directed towards something that really needs worked on that month.

January was "Junk Free January."
I have to say that I did a pretty good job at sticking with it.  My goal was to clean out and organize all of our junk drawers and to eat less junk.  Since moving into our house, there were a couple like 6 or 7 drawers, throughout out house, that have held random things.  I'll admit, the thing that I would shove in the most random drawers, was money.  Like one dollar bills, fives, tens, and some days you'd even get lucky and find a twenty that I "stored" there instead of leaving it on the counter.  It drove Gavin nutty.  I'm happy to report that all of the drawers are organized and the money has been collected.

We have done a really good job in the eating department as well and with the help of some cookbooks, we're having healthy suppers and leftovers most days.  I'll share more on those cookbooks and recipes in a few days.

I didn't have a ton of pictures of my "junk free" eating.  We have a "healthy snack" drawer in our fridge that has fruit, veggies, yogurt, and cheese for the kids, and they each get to pick one before bed.  It didn't take them long to figure out how to get that drawer open.

My goal for this coming month is "Finance February."
While Gavin and I have figured out our budget, it isn't overly detailed or specific.  We simply spend less than we are bringing in.  We pay our bills, set aside some into our savings, and then, well, the rest is just kind of there.  My goal is to really limit my online shopping, meal plan for groceries and what I call "Walmart Items", and I'm going to force myself to actually track what I spend where.  I know it will be eye opening.  I promise to report back at the end of February when I share out my March goal.
